Daily guessing games like Wordle, but with numbers
Wordle showed that one small puzzle a day, the same for everyone, can become a shared habit. Number and estimation puzzles follow the same recipe with a different kind of thinking. Here is what makes a good daily puzzle, and how DAILY SHOCK works.

The daily puzzle recipe
The daily games that stick tend to share a handful of ingredients. None of them is complicated, and together they explain why a two-minute puzzle can become part of millions of mornings.
- One puzzle a day, the same for everyone. Scarcity makes it feel special, and sameness makes it something to talk about.
- Short. A few minutes, over a coffee or on a bus.
- Fair. No timer pressure, no paying for hints, nothing that rewards whoever plays first.
- A shareable result that spoils nothing. Wordle’s coloured grid lets you boast without giving the answer away.
- A streak. A gentle reason to come back tomorrow.
Why numbers make a good daily game
Word puzzles reward vocabulary and a feel for letter patterns. Number puzzles like Nerdle reward arithmetic. Estimation puzzles reward something different again: a sense of how big things really are. That has two advantages for a daily game.
First, everyone can play. You do not need to know a fact to make a reasonable guess about how many people live in a country or how many Earths fit across the Sun. You just need a starting point and some nerve.
Second, estimation has degrees of right. A word is either the answer or it is not. A guess can be exactly right, a bit out, or wildly off, and scoring by closeness means every honest attempt earns something. That keeps a bad day from feeling like a failure.
How DAILY SHOCK works
DAILY SHOCK is five questions about the real world, the same five for everyone on Earth that day, in the same order. The puzzle changes at midnight UTC. Puzzle #1 is on 1 November 2026; before then the page shows a labelled preview that does not count towards a streak.
- Guess. One number per question. Questions come from SIZE SHOCK (how many of one thing make another) and WORLD SHOCK (one number about the planet, from official sources). 1.5K and 18M both work.
- Back yourself. Before locking, say how sure you are. It is optional, and it is the most interesting decision in the game.
- Snap. See your guess drawn as what it would mean, then the real answer. After five, share your row.

The questions get harder through the five. Round five is the big one, often a ratio of a hundred or more. Within a day, no object, country or question type appears twice, and no question repeats within 60 days.
Scoring and backing yourself
Each question is worth up to 100 points for closeness, judged on a ratio: exact scores 100, twice too high or low scores 69, ten times off scores 40. A full day is out of 500.
Backing yourself adds a choice. “Just guessing” leaves your points as they are. “Confident” multiplies them by 1.15 if you are close (within about 1.5 times the answer) and by 0.85 if not. “Certain” is ×1.3 or ×0.7. Each question is still capped at 100. There are no chips to buy, nothing to spend and no prize; it is purely about how well you know what you know.

Sharing without spoilers
When you finish, DAILY SHOCK gives you a share line with the puzzle number, a row of five coloured tiles and your total out of 500, for example “DAILY SHOCK #12, five tiles, 412/500”. Green means very close, yellow close, orange a stretch and red a long way off; a special tile marks a round where you were certain and right. The share never includes a question, a guess or an answer, so you can post it in a family chat without spoiling anyone’s day.
Making it a habit
- Play at the same time each day. Habits attach to routines: the first coffee, the commute.
- Share with one group. A family or friends chat where everyone posts their row turns a solo puzzle into a small daily conversation.
- Practise between days. DAILY SHOCK has a practice mode that never touches your daily result.
- No account needed. Your streak is kept on your own device.

Questions
When does the daily puzzle change?
At midnight UTC. Everyone in the world gets the same five questions in the same order for that day.
Do I need an account?
No. DAILY SHOCK runs in your browser and keeps your streak on your own device.
How is it scored?
Each question is worth up to 100 points for closeness, so a full day is out of 500. Exact scores 100, twice too high or low scores 69 and ten times off scores 40.
Will the share row spoil the answers?
No. It shows coloured tiles and your total, never the questions or the numbers.
